The ‘ambient net’ is a term used to describe the progression of online content and the ascension of the internet as it relates to our society. The web has made astounding strides in the 24-odd years it’s been part of our modern lives; many businesses and industries are now run through the internet, with others becoming increasingly dependent on it as technology develops further. The smartphone has emerged as the go-to tool of the internet, and now represents the majority of traffic. The ambient net takes in information from where you are, where you’ve been, and what you’re interested in.

The website gratis-spinn.com informs that over the next few years the internet will transition from being available anywhere through a specific device, to being available at all times through every device. We’re already halfway there on this front, but as we as a society become more dependent on the internet, our day-to-day surroundings will change to accommodate this shift. Many industries will change and alter as a result of the internet becoming more and more entrenched in society, until eventually it will be hard to find a steadfast sector outside of transport that isn’t wholly reliant on online interactions. The internet will become like electricity; something that is just accepted as part of functioning society.

But what does all this mean for the gaming industry, which has proved to be one of the financial forerunners of the digital era? For many people, AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) are the way of the future; it’s the next level of gaming experience, ramped up by being immersed in a digital world. The smart money however, is on AR over VR; as it currently stands, VR has too many hardware limitations to function properly. VR comprises total immersion into the gaming world, whereas AR takes virtual parts and incorporates them into the real world. One of the forerunners of Augmented Reality was Pokemon GO, a wildly successful smartphone game realised in 2016 which paved the way for future AR games by proving there was a huge appetite for the genre.

The next big thing for smartphones is multiplayer gaming. As it stands, the majority of the smartphone gaming industry’s focus has been on single player games; however, the overall trend in gaming in general is a move towards online multiplayer. Smartphone games have already prospered with multiplayer elements, as evidenced in the popularity of smartphone gambling platforms, a trend which doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. But with the rise of the ambient net, everything and everyone will be connected together at all times, leading to a major rise in the number of multiplayer games across many different platforms.

Mobile gaming as we know it will evolve to become synchronous multiplayer games where all players are connected at all times. These games will most likely feature Augmented Reality elements, while VR will remain a separate beast for the foreseeable future, owing to its dependency on equipment and hardware. The internet is the defining invention of the 21st century, and it has developed immeasurably in a short space of time. Whichever way it progresses next, the future is undoubtedly bright for online gaming.
