Those of us who follow the gadget world have known for quite some time now that Nokia was transitioning away from Symbian and MeeGo in favor of Windows Phone 7. Well for better or for worse, today at Nokia world, the first two handsets running the Windows Phone 7 OS were announced and they certainly are impressive for their category.

Lumia 800

The Lumia 800 is the first of the two new Windows powered handsets and in terms of hardware it looks a lot like the ill-fated N9. The phone features a curved 3.7-inch AMOLED display with Nokia’s ClearBlack technology, making the display gorgeous when it’s on or off. The resolution on that display is the Windows Phone standard 800×480, so it isn’t anything like Apple’s Retina display but the increased color quality of AMOLED may make up for it. The phone has a very stylish tapered industrial look, and is just 12.1mm thick. Under the hood is a 1.4GHz Qualcomm CPU and a respectable 512MBs of RAM. While that might seem a bit underpowered compared to recent Android offerings, optimization is every bit as important and Windows Phone 7 isn’t as taxing. The phone also features 16GBs of on device storage for files and apps along with 25GBs of free cloud storage with SkyDrive. On the back is an 8-megapixel camera that has been optimized for low light situations. The Lumia 800 will be available for purchase in November for 420 Euros unlocked.

Lumia 710

The Lumis 710 is a cheaper, more customizable version of the 800. It may not have that sexy industrial design of the 800, but it does feature the same 1.4GHz processor as so performance should be just as fast. This phone is available in either “stealth black” or “crisp white” and both feature replaceable back covers in just about every color you can imagine. The Lumia 710 will also be released in November, but at a much more affordable 270 Euros unlocked.

  1. […] Remember that big Nokia Microsoft partnership? Well in it, two devices were announced, and while they were available soon after in Europe, the US didn’t get a word about it until months later. The cheaper of the two the 710 was finally released by T-mobile in the states,  but the higher end 800 was no where to be found. Well at AT&T’s conference that all changed, as they announced a high end Nokia handset would be coming and with an added bonus will be the second Windows Phone to feature LTE connectivity. As someone who was sent a review unit of the 800 I can say with certainty that US Windows phone fans have a lot to be excited about! […]
