The Adventures of Master Mantis and Grasshopper San iPhone App Review

I was a bit reluctant at first to download this, as I feared it would be another one of those addictive games that I would spend hours glued to. I needn’t have worried. The aim of The Adventures of Master Mantis and Grasshopper San is for you (the grasshopper) to ‘pinch’ the screen with your two fingers (which appear on screen as a large set of chopsticks) in order to kill bugs and become ‘the greatest bug snatcher the world has ever known’. In each level you must tackle bugs in the air and on the floor by tipping the screen accordingly. As you move up through the levels, the bug numbers and types increase. Pinching some bugs means a deduction in points – butterflies, for example, are fragile creatures so you must not kill them. Of course!

Admittedly I was quite bad at this game – I discovered immediately that long nails and the ‘pinching’ method really don’t mix well. But even a nail trim did not increase my affections for it. I’m bad at Tetris but I can spend hours playing that – this just did not grip me. From the irritating tones of the oriental music that plays in the background, to the repetitiveness of each level, I just found it a bit boring. And the pinching movements really made my fingers ache after just a few levels.

Clearly a lot of work and thought has gone into it. There are detailed instructions of the types of insects you are killing and an extensive ‘help’ section so that, within seconds of downloading it, I had grasped the concept and was able to play. With a 4+ rating, perhaps this is one to download for the children in your life. There is a free taster available – I say give that a go first before you part with your money. This one just wasn’t for me.

Pros: It is easy to grasp, with very good instructions and information given
Cons: It’s extremely repetitive and I really did not warm to the ‘pinching’ the screen method.
