It’s the age-old quandary; if you found a wallet that’s stuffed full of cash, would you hand it in to the police or would you go on a spending spree?  The thing is, this situation is almost always going to stay in the realms of the hypothetical, but we do find other things all of the time, things that may not be as useful to us but are invaluable to their owners.  CodeMe is a practical technological solution for scatterbrains; you can tag any of your possessions and if somebody finds one, all they have to do is scan the tag with their smartphone and they will have the detail of who to return it to.

The CodeMe kit contains several labels that you can stick on anything that you care for, such as iPhones, iPads, sunglasses, wallets, girlfriends (well, I guess that they might object to wear you’d stick it…) and then you just go about your daily business.  If you do lose one of these tagged items, all the person who finds it has to do is scan the label with any QR scanner or just enter the number into the CodeMe website.  CodeMe will then connect the finder with the owner through an anonymous messaging network and can even share their respective GPS locations.  The two people can then discuss how to return/reclaim the item.

Now, as no good deed should go unpunished, CodeMe even has a ‘Reward the Finder’ system in place, which allows the owner to send a set of CodeMe tags to the finder’s address; they will have already seen the benefit of CodeMe, so will be over the moon!

The genius of this product is that it obviates the potential for a finder to say, “Oh, well if I hand this into that shop or restaurant, the staff will probably pilfer it so I may as well keep it myself!”  You don’t have the option to be blissfully ignorant, so the majority of people (a whopping 90%, according to the CodeMe video) would like the opportunity to return a lost item.

The tags themselves are 100% weatherproof and do not require a charge or battery, so feel free to stick them anywhere you like and rest easy knowing that your belongings are a lot more protected than they used to be.
