We’ve just received confirmation from a private source on the floor at the Yerba Buena Center for Arts that the new iPad does indeed have a Retina Display. An Apple employee has confirmed to iPhoneAppCafe that they have seen and handled a model with pixel density similar to that of the iPhone 4 and 4S.

They were unable to confirm the hardware specifications, or whether this would be dubbed the iPad 3 or other ‘HD’ themed name as has been widely rumored.

This provides a further level of confirmation to the rumors and predictions that have been flying around about one of the most appealing features of the iPad 3; it would seem that the prediction that the new model of iPad will contain a “revolutionary retina display featuring double-resolution screen with 2048×1536 pixels and modified IGZO (indium, gallium, zinc) technology that will provide an improved pixel density of 330 ppi” (IBT) were correct.

This is a vast improvement on the iPad 2’s display of 1024×768 pixels and a pixel density of 132 ppi and will certainly be of huge interest to anyone who is looking for the tablet’s screen to replicate the resolution of the iPhone 4 and 4S.  A Retina Display has actually been rumoured for the iPad since before the iPad 2 was released, so many apple fans will have been waiting a long time for this good news to reach their ears (or eyes?!).

  1. Wow, I’m very disappointed in this site. I came here for the first time for app reviews and those are fine, but reporting such stories as fact with a source that’s questionable at best is just bad journalism. It’s obvious to anyone that follows technology news even casually that the next IPad will have a retina display so you likely won’t be proved wrong, but reporting it as fact with a questionable “source” for hits is frankly sad. I started to suggest people come here as a news source in january, when I found you guys were providing short sweet and informative coverage on more than just Apple products shown off at CES. I was pleasantly surprised to see balanced coverage of the CES windows and android phones and tablets as well as the IPad app reviews I’ve come to love. Since I own an Android phone and an Apple IPad it seemed like the perfect balance. But with bad “news” stories for the hits like this it makes me regret recommending you guys to my friends as a news source. Needless to say I’m removing your feed from my reader. I don’t know if it has to do with who writes what story or if this is your new direction but I hope thats not it. Maybe I’ll come back in a few weeks. Everyone deserves another chance, but at least for now I’m leaving very disappointed.

  2. Hi Richard,

Firstly, apologies for the delay in replying; things have been pretty hectic in the iPAC office! I was sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy our news story and was disappointed that you feel that we have somehow let the site’s reputation down by sharing this news. Our main focus with iPhoneAppCafe is to bring our readers the best app reviews and update them with the latest smartphone news and competitions.

We obviously can’t compete with the ‘big boys’ like techcrunch and mashable on breaking news stories, which is why we were so excited to get this exclusive news from inside the Apple Store; I’m assuming that you are a blogger or writer for another tech site, so I would have thought that you would understand our need to keep the source’s identity private; in this economic climate, I don’t want to be responsible for anyone losing their job! The fact that you are insinuating that we put the post up to attract more readers is actually quite funny when you take a look at the back end of the site and see how many people actually read this news story! Whether the iPad 3 retina display was a foregone conclusion or not (and with Apple’s reputation for ‘surprise’ marketing tactics, I wouldn’t have been at all shocked if it didn’t actually happen – we all remember the iPhone 5/4s shocker, right?!), we saw no harm in sharing this news with our readers. We will continue to share the latest news with our readers, as well as focusing on fantastic app reviews, competitions and quirky little posts that we hope entertain and engage or fans. I hope that we can expect you back as a regular reader of our site and that you enjoy the content that we continue to post.

We love getting feedback on the site, so if you have any more comments please either post them here or contact me directly at david@fanappic.com.

I hope that you enjoy this Easter weekend,

    Best,

    David Harfield
