WebMD helps you diagnose your child’s symptoms at the touch of a screen

This handy, interactive app is a truly useful one – and you get all the functionality for free. When your child suddenly comes down with something and you want answers fast, grab your iPhone and check his or her symptoms with the WebMD mobile app.

The WebMD symptom checker is easy and fun to use; simply tell the app where it hurts and then answer a series of questions. It would make for a fun and educational game as well, as long as you’re not worried about turning your child into a hypochondriac!

Of course, no self-administered test or personal research will ever take the place of one-to-one professional medical advice. However, that doesn’t detract from having a wealth of medical information and advice at your fingertips.

As well as the comprehensive symptom checker, you can get detailed information about a huge number of illnesses and conditions, look up the details, side effects and contra-indications of drugs, and – my favourite – easily access detailed instructions for a variety of First Aid situations.

We all hope never to have to use First Aid skills for real, but most people, even if they have been on a course, will forget crucial details that could mean the difference between saving a life and losing one. I feel so reassured to know that I have all the First Aid instructions I could possibly need, right here in my pocket.

UK users should note that the function that shows nearby hospitals and local health-related services only works for the USA. Otherwise, the app gets full marks from me!

App released 15th September 2010, developed by WebMD Health Corporation, £ Free
