With all the interesting, useful and practical things that mobile phones offer these days, the issue of whether or not it is really necessary for parents to equip their child with a mobile phone is becoming more and more of an urgent matter. When making a decision, one must consider many factors, carefully weighing the pros and cons.
Pros
For one, it provides you and your child an easy and readily available means of communication. Secondly, it is practical, as a lot of phones nowadays, such as the iPhone, allow you to be able to track where your child is going. And thirdly, it just gets them to stop whining about not being able to blend in with their peers.
Cons
However, it is inevitable for a child’s parents to have a dilemma. Having a mobile phone opens a lot of doors not only to a (possibly) massive change in your child’s social life, but also to an immense pool of media and information that he or she gets access to. There’s also the possible threat to security, as mobile phones attract the attention of felons. That said, should you still buy your kid a mobile phone?
My 10-year old boy had been bugging me for an iPhone for months. Of course, mobile phones are already a rage even among kids, and the Apple’s iPhone is definitely a favorite. Considering the price, I had qualms for a long time. But this is how I made my decision.
Should you buy your kid an iPhone?
Seriously, when is a child old enough to have one? Actually, the answer depends on you. You know your child best. In a general sense, it depends on your needs.
Are you often away that you need a means to monitor your child while at work? Do you need constant communication? Do you think your child is responsible enough to handle such a product? These are just some of the questions that you have to ask yourself.
Usually, children at the age of 9 or 10 can already handle responsibilities. Younger kids of this generation sure can already use such gadgets, but personally, I would advise against giving them their own at a very young age.
In the end, the decision is yours to make. Just ensure that you make necessary precautions before giving your child an iPhone. Monitor the applications and media that your child gets access to. Equip the phone with a protective case, and teach your child proper gadget care to do away from needing iPhone repair. With proper parental guidance, gadgets like these can be very helpful friends for you and your child.
