We’re always reading articles that talk about the latest games that are going to be released to the iPhone, or the latest additions that are going to be available. It is more rare to see an article about any upcoming iPhone apps for your car. Well, here you go. Both General Motors and Ford have agreed to work with app developers in order to establish apps that will be able to be used while in transit, which raises some interesting possibilities.

The Future of Cars & The Smartphone

There are quite a few prospective projects that will help to integrate the use of your smartphone with your vehicle. This will make it easier to complete specific tasks on your smartphone while you are driving. You will be able to keep both of your hands on the wheel and still operate your smartphone. The idea is to not only make it easier for people to complete tasks on the go, but to make it as safe as possible.
Many states have not only passed anti-texting laws, but they have also passed laws that make it illegal to use a hands-on phone while driving at all. This means that you can use your cell phone only if you have a hands-free device. You are not able to even hold the phone while you are talking let alone text or conduct other practices. This is not such a bad idea, as individuals have a habit of getting distracted and this can lead to serious injury. GM, Ford, and app developers want to find a way to make it as easy as possible to maximize the use of your smartphone while minimizing the risk.

Just a Few Ideas

How great would it be if you did not have to reach for the dial in order to change the radio? You would not only be able to listen to the exact song that you want to hear, but you will be able to do so just by speaking the title. App developers are working on a piece of software that will allow you to select the exact song that you want to hear simply by stating the title. You will not have to change the station, you will not have to even fiddle with gadgets on the steering wheel, you simply say the title.
I am sure that your smartphone already has the capabilities to send a text that was composed by voice, but, honestly, how often do those voice composed texts actually turn out the way you intended? Many voice-composed text programs are not very accurate which makes a bigger hassle sending messages that if you actually just stopped to type the text. An app-in-the-making will allow you to compose a text or email by voice, so that you can dictate to it while driving. The voice recognition is expected to be more sensitive, so you will be able to actually speak and have your text show up accurately.
The smartphone app developers, GM and Ford plan to make these apps possible by working together. Ford and GM are going to open up their design platforms to the app developers that are interested in building applications to work with these vehicles. Everyone is aware that with the more capabilities that come available on the Smartphone there is a need for a way to be able to use this programs while on the go. Without these capabilities it pretty much defeats the whole purpose of a mobile device. Ford and GM are the only car manufacturers that are actually working with app developers. Others such as Toyota and Lexus are working on their own programs in order to be more smartphone-friendly.
