It’s no secret that the video game industry is booming. It’s been steadily expanding over the last two decades, and with the introduction of the internet, the industry was afforded numerous new avenues to explore and evolve into. The rise and rise of smartphones has only added ammunition to its arsenal. But despite the prevalence of gaming apps, there’s still a few games we’d like to see make the leap to the smartphone format. With the new year nearly upon us, here’s three of the top contenders.
1 – Grand Theft Auto
From the action genre, the king of third person action-adventurers, Grand Theft Auto. This game has done serious business for Rockstar over its five incarnations and various spin-offs, with the most recent version (V) selling over 54 million copies as of a few months ago. Better than that is the fact that the game is cross-platform and embraced by all users simultaneously, through PS4, Xbox and PC. A move to smartphones would make a lot of sense, the only foreseeable problems being containing the massive trademark expanse of the game and retaining the glorious attention to detail. Doable though? Most definitely.
2 – Pro Evolution Soccer 2016
A worthy adversary to FIFA 16, Pro Evo falls behind its rival in one major category; it doesn’t have an app! Kids, students and adult as alike go gaga for this football console game, spending many hours transfixed over the on-screen action – quite how you could get seven undergraduates piled round an iPhone while they should be in a Philosophy lecture is beyond me, but I’m sure the developers have thought of everything.
3 – Splatoon
The sleeper hit of 2015, and showing especially strong sales in its native Japan, Splatoon is a seriously fun game for adults and kids alike. To be honest, there are a number of Nintendo exclusive games that would make the cut and translate brilliantly to smartphones; however, Platoon should be one of the top contenders. Historically, very few Nintendo games have made the leap, though rumours are rife that that’s set to change over the next couple of years, with the video game giant eyeing up a transition to the app world. If this is true, it’s great news for gaming fans, as Nintendo have produced some of the best-loved classics over the past twenty years. Whichever way the chips fall, it’s a good time to be a gaming fan!
4 – Slots Games
The thrill of seeing those three cherries line up on your computer screen is a rush that you’d love to be able to carry around with you in your pocket, so we’d love to see more of the high-quality gambling sites release apps in the new year. With sites like Jackpotland, a new, popular video slots site, which boasts an impressive array of games for casual and hardcore players alike to choose from, available whenever you fancied a flutter, the chance of being bored in your spare time drops to zero.
