Before Mr. Jobs gave us the iPhone, carrying your office around with you would have required a forklift truck and a very amenable secretary; nowadays, however, we can work remotely just by tapping at the screens of our iPads and iPhones and this is made all the more easy by such apps as myOffice.

The layout of the app is very basic with just a couple of tabs as well as a ‘Help’ function; the Help tab is very comprehensive and will be vital to users when first testing it out.  Essentially, the app aims to combine Microsoft Office Documents Viewer, Open Source Document & Spreadsheets Editor, PDF Maker, Voice Recorder, Document Scanner and File Manager into one app; having all of these eggs in your one basket is an attractive proposition for anyone who uses them regularly, which will be many people in the business world.

To create a new document, you can use the Document Template available; these are myriad in content and range from an Affidavit to General Power of Attorney to Return To Work Medical Certificate – if you can think of it, they’ve got a template for it.  The quality of the templates is impressive and it could work as a valuable timesaver for anyone who doesn’t want to type out yet another Reference Letter.  Concurrently, there’s also a Sample Letters and Emails tab that does exactly what it says on the tin; there are sections for Business, Employment and Complaints and some of these are hilarious as well as pretty useful; the Confronting a Friend About Gossip template is just excellent.

The ability to open and edit files from all sorts of apps and downloads is really appealing; the synchronicity with Dropbox, USB, Google Drive and Microsoft Sky Drive is what makes the app a viable option of all of your business editing needs.  Excel spreadsheets are also available for diddling with, for all of you number bods out there.

You can also create voice memos, hand-written notes and sketches (hello stylus addicts), and take pictures with your iDevices camera and insert them into a document – this is particularly cool and probably my favourite aspect of the app.  By converting your files to PDF, you can instantly transfer your doodles and ideas to an email-able format and send them around to your colleagues/buddies.

For anyone that likes to work remotely, this app is a great addition to the suite of office apps that take up place on your home screen.  And $4.99 is much cheaper than hiring a forklift truck.
