Commuting to work can be a serious drag and overcrowded train carriages can be the stuff of nightmares. Sometimes it’s just not enough to simply read the ads again and again whilst dreaming of your ‘happy place’ – sometimes, you need a little more distraction. That’s where iPhone games come in seriously handy; a good game will be absorbing, relatively simple to play but a challenge to master and damn addictive to boot. Rocklien Run – Endless Space Runner is the new gaming app by developer Comicorp and it possesses this holy trinity in spades.
The premise of the game is simple enough – fly through space on different badass spaceships and try not to die in an endless gameplay setting. You can move your spaceship left to right by tapping the screen or spinning it further down by swiping instead.
The setting for the game actually looks a little like guitar hero, in that the wormhole (or whatever it is) you’re travelling through is made up of different strings that have baddies, meteors, rocks and helpful stars scattered across them. You need to dodge the things that will kill you whilst collecting as many coins, stars and points as possible. The stars are your only weapon/defense and the different colors have different properties. Green lets you shoot bullets, blue fires a laser beam, pink destroys everything close to you and gold makes you indestructible and travel super fast. Each star’s power lasts about five seconds, so you need to constantly be on the look out for you next bit of arsenal.
As you progress through the games, you score points which can go towards either pimping your current ship or ‘winning’ a different model. As far as I could tell, the different ships were mostly just aesthetic and nothing really changed all that much in the game itself, but it’s nice for a bit of variety every five minutes or so.
Rocklien Run – Endless Space Runner is free to download from the App Store. The in-app advertorials are purely a choice thing and are offered as a way to make some extra coins fast so that you don’t have to wait for your next upgrade.
