After weeks of endless speculations and rumor roundups, Apple finally announced the latest version of iPhone – the iPhone 5.

iPhone enthusiasts, users, fans and developers expected this new device to bring some new and improved changes and they were not disappointed; iPhone 5 offers users a number of improved features and functions like – iOS 6, A6 processor, a thinner and lighter design, a bigger screen, better services, 4G LTE connectivity and much more. But what really takes the cake is its enhanced audio capabilities.

So, what is it that makes the audio system in iPhone 5, the focus of everyone’s attention? Let’s find out.

High-end, ergonomic EarPods

Apple put in more than three years for designing a special kind of headphones, which they have named EarPods. Here are some of the features of these specially designed, innovative EarPods:

  •   They won’t fall off easily: The EarPods designed by Apple are ergonomic. They have a distinctive shape, designed as per the geometry of the human ear and so, they easily fit in almost all types of ears. This means you can use EarPods comfortably for long durations, without worrying about them falling off from your ears during physical activities like jogging or working out.
  •   They don’t form an airtight seal: Regular headphones fit tightly in your ear, sealing you ear canal which invariably leads to the creation of vacuum. But with three holes poked in EarPods, this vacuum will be a thing of the past, as it will give more mobility to the speaker diaphragms.

This means phone calls will be more natural and more audible, and let’s not forget music/videos, which will be more enjoyable than before.

Three mics and two new technologies

iPhone 5 is designed with three microphones instead of two – one is in the front, on at the back and one at the bottom of the device. The front and back mics work together to focus on sound from the desired location for clearer audio – a technique known as Beamforming. Apart from this, Apple focused on two new technologies in the device, namely:

  •  Noise cancellation: This technology reduces the background noise. This means, background noise will be nullified as much as possible, during your voice calls.
  •  Wideband audio: iPhone 5 will use more bandwidth to transmit higher-quality audio over your network (however, this feature will depend on the carrier support). Good news for those who frequently use conference calls.

In conclusion

The improved audio system of iPhone 5 does look promising with its improved voice calls, inventive headphones and acoustic performance. It surely will draw attention from users and developers alike, very soon in the near future.
