Of all the apps that are out there that can make your life easier, Phone Drive (+File Sharing) has to be up there with the best; it turns your iOS device into a portable WiFi/USB Flash Drive with which you can play, browse, organize, share, download, and manage your files right on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Oh yes.
In my opinion, the best thing about Phone Drive (+File Sharing) has to be the sheer versatility of the app; once you access its main page, you can set up folders with which you can organize your drive. So, let’s say that you want to import some music files or photos, you can simply use the edit button to move, copy, delete or zip them and then send them to any nearby compatible device via wireless network or email. This saves the hassle of logging on to a public or office WiFi and is quite a lot faster than the average WiFi connection to boot.
To upload files, all you have to do is click a file on your computer and drag it over to the drop box on the browser screen which will load the files on to the app; the beauty of this is that you are able to get songs from other computers without losing all of your current songs by syncing it. (Apple, we’ve found away around your rules…!)
The app also doubles as a different way to play music as opposed to your standard iPod function, which means that you can bang out your tunes as your uploading various files, controlling the play mode with settings like ‘shuffle’ and ‘repeat’. This is particularly useful when you couple it with downloading music from other people’s computers, seeing as you no longer have to rely on your iPod function to control your music.
Another cool feature is the password protection, which stops other people being able to access your files; simple, but very effective, especially if you have personal or sensitive information in those files. You can also turn off the file sharing setting so that when you are connected to the Internet, no one can download the files.
The app’s text editor allows you to edit your text files or source codes on your actual iPhone or iPad, which saves a lot of hassle in not having to upload the files to a computer in order to amend their text.
Summary
Essentially, Phone Drive (+File Sharing) is a very useful app that transforms your iPhone into a portable WiFi/USB Flash Drive and saves you mammoth amounts of hassle in downloading and syncing files; for $1.99, this is cheaper than both a real flash drive and it takes up less room in your pocket. Bargain.
