Ah the ’90s… My thumbs still twitch with the muscle memory gained from playing hours of Snake on my Nokia 3315, but times change, and in the fast paced world of mobile gaming it’s adapt or die. No one knew this better than the Spice Girls and in their smash hit “2 become 1” (arguably one of the best love anthems to come out of the ’90s, but that’s another article) they really hammer the point home with a not-so-delicate smattering of innuendos and (if you’re watching the video) hand gestures. So, taking cue from the queens of pop, app developer Steve Howse decided to take the most popular game from the age of grunge and splice it up with a cult hit from today. Frankenstein’s monster could never have been as evil or as fun as Slither.io.
Facing adversaries from across the globe, your goal is to become the biggest snake on the board by the end of the day. To do this you need to eat as many food pellets as possible; the bigger the better in this game and to receive the ultimate payload you’ll have to keep a lookout for the remnants of an exploded opponent.
Once you’ve gotten a little weight behind you then the fun really begins, use your extra muscle to mess with the other players by having them run into you and erupt into a huge pile of delicious orbs. Once you’ve gobbled their remains and made yourself even more formidable then it’s time to lookout for your next kill…
The graphics of this game, like both of it’s predecessors, is refreshingly simple: you use your fingers to move your snake across a graph-like background, guiding it through a matrix of food pellets and opponents. The only weapon that you’re armed with, other than ruthless tactics, is the ability to move at high speed by double tapping the screen – you lose length this way (about 5 balls per second) but it can be a handy trick when trying to trap an adversary.
Slither.io is free to download as well as being available to play online, the only price being the timed advertorials in between matches, but if you can put up with a bit of pop-up distraction then I think that Slither.io might well become your new favourite vice.
So if you fancy ‘Becoming 1’ with Slither.io then snake your way on over to the App Store today!
