After having reviewed Dragon Dictation in this app review by Cassie, in a peculiar twist to the normal style of writing articles, today we at iPhoneAppCafe are going to dictate the entire article into our iPhone. We’re hoping that Dragon Dictate, the new voice recognition app from Dragon NaturallySpeaking, will work out every word we say and transpose a word-perfect rendition of statements. Let’s see how it goes.

The Dragon Dictation app was created by Nuance – you may know them from their Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 software, available for £149.99 on their website. At the moment, it’s completely free to use – download the app and dictate. Once you’ve finished speaking, click done and the app will send off the writing to its servers, which will then very promptly get back to you with a transposed article.

The best thing about Dragon Dictation is not the fact that it works brilliantly, which it does, but the fact that it integrates so easily with the rest of the iPhone. Once you’ve finished dictating, click the send button on the bottom right and it will give you a myriad of options to post the article (or whatever you type) can

Be it to a text message, Facebook, Twitter, e-mail or other social networks, you can send your text almost anywhere. It even has a location detector when you can choose what geographical location you’d like to register with an it’ll change the dialect to your area, customising to the nuances of your country or region’s accent).

The best thing really is that it’s so simple to use: you open, click, talk and click “send”. It actually makes it faster to talk your messages than type them. In fact I’ve already stop typing my messages and completely use Dragon Dictation for all of my text-based communication on my phone.

Another benefit of using Dictation is that it features a keyboard, so if you wish to annotate or correct a slightly mistaken word, or even just add in some punctuation like an ! , then you’re free to do so before you send-out, leaving all the editing within a single app.

Another nice touch is that it if it records something incorrectly, you click on the word and it will give you a list of other options which it could have sounded like. This doesn’t happen quite as often as I’d like, which suggests perhaps I speak more incorrectly than I should, but when it does come up is a nice option to be able to instantly change the correct word without having to retype it.

In this paragraph I am fringy talking really quickly to see if Dragon Dictation can still pick up are fast spoken words. I’m talking around maybe 120 words a minute, but, as you can see from this extract:
something at the moment and as you can see it’s not as good it and picking up on trying to say when I speak very quickly
(Ed: Or rather, when you talk too fast, the app’s recognition rate drops right down)
However, it is still better than most other voice recognition that I have seen on the market. The biggest problem, however, is if you are dictating, and get a wireless network error notification, or a 20% battery life warning, it cancels your seeking halfway through – which if you just said something inspirational and on-the-fly, you may lose it forever. That’s a bit of irritation that will hopefully be fixed in a later update.
At the moment, Dragon Dictation is completely free. I cannot stress how good a deal this is. It has certainly changed the way I take notes – it’s on the first page of my iPhone and has sped up my message-sending and note-taking tenfold- something my e-mail estranged family will be glad of.
