A smartphone can be more than just a way to keep your child busy on a long car ride; it can also be a way to help them learn. Today, there are hundreds of iPhone apps dedicated to exactly that, and here are seven of the best ones to consider.
1. Alpha Writer
Alpha Writer is a multi-level reading and writing program, spanning from teaching children the alphabet all the way up to allow them to write their own stories with words and pictures. The idea behind using writing to learn reading is Montessori’s method for teaching children how to read, based on the idea that at early stages sounds are more important than spelling.
2. Analogy –
Analogy helps to teach children critical thinking skills by having them complete patterns and find connections between objects in the style of the gifted and talented tests often administered by special education professionals and IQ testers. Updates provide more questions to keep the game fresh.
3. Signing Time ASL – Sign Language –
Sign language is growing in popularity as the first language to teach babies, helping them develop early communication and fine motor skills. This app provides a variety of flash cards and videos to share with your young child.
4. Free Books –
Technically, free books itself isn’t free – it’s $1.99 – but the app provides the buyer with an easy reading format for 23,469 classic books available in public domain. Yes, 23,469! This app may be the only app you need to keep an older child who enjoys reading busy for a long time.
5. TimesTables –
TimesTables teachers children how to multiply, with a few added features to make it more fun. The usual flash cards are included, along with puzzles containing images, as well as a scoreboard to help encourage more competitive children. The app also recognizes handwriting, allowing users to write their answers on the touchpad.
6. Kids Money –
Kids Money is a free, simple money management app with fun graphics to teach children how to save up for things they want to buy. Imputing the monetary goal, allowance, and gift money allows the child to see exactly how long saving up will take them.
7. Britannica Kids: Solar System –
Britannica has developed a variety of apps to teach children about science, and among them is this edition focused on astronomy. The app features several games including jigsaw puzzles and memory cards, along with gorgeous images of outer space.
