There are so many types of different sports that are played around the world and here is a list of some of the most popular.

Soccer

Soccer, or football as it is known in many countries, is probably the most widespread sport in the world. It is played in pretty much every country and has an estimated following of over 4 billion people. Some of the standouts in skill are countries such as Brazil, England, Germany and Spain. The relative ease of learning the skills and rules of the game has lent it to be as prevalent as it is on a global scale today. Soccer lovers all over the world tune in to watch the FIFA world cup every year with an audience of over 1 billion people.

Basketball

One of the most popular sports in the United States, basketball has become more than just a sport. It has become an institution in that it encourages people to strive for their best with world-class athletes such as Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Magic Johnson using their celebrity and influence to get people involved in the sport so they can endeavor to be the best they can. Cricket

Cricket was invented in England in the 16th century and has spread to many countries around the world that have discovered a love for the game. Badminton

This may come as a surprise in this list, but badminton is played regularly by around  220 million people around the world. If you know the word ‘shuttlecock’ then you know what badminton is. The sport is particularly popular in Asia, which is where most of the champions come from. The game was first developed in British India in the 19th century and caught on quickly and is now played all over the world particularly in China, Spain, England, India, and Korea.  It has been an Olympic sport since 1992, with China being the dominating country. 

Formula 1 

There is nothing like the thrill of Formula 1 coming to town in Australia. Before it was hosted in Melbourne, it took place in Adelaide but has been held in Melbourne since 1996. Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher was a powerhouse for years before his retirement and Mclaren’s David Coulthard was certainly a worthy rival having an outstanding 62 podium finishes. Aussie Daniel Ricciardo, who stormed the world of F1 back in 2010, had impeccable timing and was thus kept on as the main driver due to his skill and precision. It is a thoroughly international sport and takes place in 33 countries.

There is no shortage of international sports to choose from either as a player or a spectator. These are but a few of the world’s most popular sports.
