We basically live with our phones attached to us these days. So it can be a pretty terrifying experience if something goes amiss when we’re using them. When my iPhone won’t turn on, I follow a few easy steps to get my phone back in the game. If you’re faced with a black screen on your beloved iPhone, don’t assume you’ll have to shell out tons of cash for a brand new phone. Try out these tips first!

Try charging your phone

Obviously, your iPhone needs to be charged to be fully functioning. Plug your iPhone into a wall charger or your computer, and charge it for 15-30 minutes. If it doesn’t turn on by itself, try powering your phone on and off again to reset things.

Check your charger

If the above step didn’t change anything, you should check your charger and cable to make sure they’re working. Use another cable or charger to see if that might be the problem.

Restart your phone

Of course, the first thing tech support always advises is to restart your phone. If charging the battery hasn’t helped, hold the on/off button on your phone for a few seconds. This might allow your phone to reboot and stop any further issues. If this doesn’t remedy the problem, you might need to do a hard reset. To do this, hold the on/off button and the home button down simultaneously for at least 10 seconds. The shutdown slider will appear, but keep holding the buttons down. When the Apple logo pops up, let go of the buttons, and your iPhone should start up.

Reset to factory settings

If all else fails, you’ll probably need to restore your iPhone to its factory settings. This will erase all of the data and settings on your phone – so it’s a good idea to always sync and back up your data! To do a reset, plug in your USB cable to the lightning/dock connector port (not into your computer). Hold down the home button and plug the other end of the USB cable into your computer. iTunes will open and put your iPhone into recovery mode, which should completely restore your phone.

Go into DFU mode

If your iPhone still won’t turn on, one last effort would be to put your phone into DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode because it’s just not able to boot up on its own. Plug your iPhone into your computer, hold the on/off button down for three seconds. Then hold the on/off button and home button down for 10 seconds. Let go of the on/off button, but keep holding the home button for another five seconds. The screen should stay black, which means you’ve made it to DFU mode. There will be instructions that pop up through iTunes to help get your phone back in working order.
