Grapeful

I don’t drink wine, at all, never have. That’s not true actually; ironically, the only place I’ve ever drunk wine is at mass. Such a rebel. Anyway, despite not having a penchant for wine, I’ve heard enough people talk about it to know it’s damn important, especially when it comes to meals. And although I may not care for the taste of the vine, that in no way affects my appreciation and admiration for Grapeful, a cool, clever little app that wants to be your guide to all things wine related. It’s alarmingly hip, it’s free, and it’s out now for both iOS and Android.

Like it or not, wine is a huge part of modern day living. It’s served and consumed at most formal and semi-formal occasions, bonded over during cosy nights in and routinely given as a gift with alarmingly regularity. So, it might pay to get a little up to speed on the cavernous vault of potential knowledge surrounding the subject of wine. This app will most definitely help you do that. It has a general knowledge feature containing some far out facts (for example, did you know that you’re more likely to be killed by a champagne cork than a poisonous spider??) and this is but the least impressive of its features.

The main idea behind Grapeful came to creator Shakira when she was at a gathering with friends and was suddenly elected to elect the wine that would be accompanying their meal. A lightbulb went off and Grapeful was born. The app matches the most suitable wine for a huge variety of meals, either dishes or entire cuisine. I’m a big fan of sushi, and Grapeful was more than happy to inform me that the optimum companion for the delicious raw fish is none other than Gruner Veltliner, Austria’s flagship wine.

Even though I don’t drink the stuff, I kind of love the idea, and I can see this being a major component in many a foodie’s handheld device. The app doesn’t stop with match-making dishes and wines; you’re also able to input specific restaurants, letting Grapeful bring up their wine lists, allowing you to stay ahead of the game ahead of time. This rather wonderful little creation comes to us courtesy of two young developers who should be applauded for identifying a genuine gap in the crowded app market and filling it with style to spare. If you’re a fan of wine and cuisine in general, or simply fancy getting a little more informed about this historic social lynchpin, check this one out ASAP.

Pour yourself a generous glass and head on over to the App Store or Google Play to get tasting today!
