Beneath A Steel Sky iPhone App Review
When we think about games consoles we generally think of Playstation, Nintendo and Xbox. Equally so, the vast majority of younger iPhone users wouldn’t have the foggiest idea who or what an Amiga is. Well, aside from being a fine home computer, the Amiga was also one of the best games machines ever created and one of the stand out titles released for the platform was Beneath A Steel Sky, which is now available on the iPhone at a modestly priced £1.79.

Set in a post apocalyptic Australia, you take control of Robert Foster, a young boy who is the sole survivor of a plane crash in ‘the gap’ (a mad max style wasteland). Adopted and raised by the indigenous people, Robert is one day kidnapped by security soldiers sent from Union City by its all-powerful computer LINC. Think of it as playing as Red Dwarfs Dave Lister in a Monkey Island equivalent of 2000 ADs Megacity and you’re some way there to understanding the tone of the game.

Despite being 17-years-old, the game never shows it’s age and remains just as well thought out and hilarious as it did back in 1994. A major part of that charm is thanks to the bizarre array of characters and Joey the Robot, who is still a tool but equally fantastic entertainment. On top of this, Dave Gibbons animated work has been given a crisp overhaul to bring the film intro bang up to date.

Amidst a plethora of games available on the app store, Beneath a Steel Sky perfectly demonstrates how a classic point and click adventure can be brought up to date for the modern market, while also teaching newer titles a thing or two about riveting storytelling. Without a doubt it’s true classic that stands the test of time.

  1. That games sounds wicked! Never had an Amiga so I missed out on it first time round, how close is it to the original?

  2. It’s near enough the exact same as the original. Bar a few more slick cut scenes and a slight change to make the controls more iphone friendly. If you liked Monkey Island it will be right up your street, and in my opinion better (certainly for iphone as well).
