Have you ever wanted to visit the Seven Wonders of the World? It seems like something everyone should try and get around to before their allotted time on this earth is up, as they supposedly represent the pinnacle of human achievement. At least, they did back in the day; we’ve certainly got a few potential contenders of our own from recent times. But visiting these said Seven Wonders is easier said than done. They crop up all over the globe; you’d need a significant budget and a significant amount of time to get through them all properly. Luckily, if you have neither of these, developer Michael Gifford is on hand to help you out. He’s created an exciting adventure game that will take you to all seven of the New Wonders; it’s simply called New 7 Wonders of the World, and it’s out now for iOS.

First, a distinction must be made. There have actually been numerous lists of the seven Wonders of the World compiled over the years and none of them is regarded as definitive. I thought the Sphinx was a mainstay, but apparently not. Same for the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, but apparently they didn’t make the new cut either. This game takes its cues from a list compiled by votes from the global public over (fittingly) seven years, and includes the Colosseum, the Great Wall, the Petra in Jordan, the Chichen Itza in Mexico, the Machu Picchu in Peru, the Taj Mahal and the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil. These are the ‘New’ Seven Wonders of the World, so even if you don’t know what the hell the Chichen Itza is, please get with the times.

The game takes the form of a virtual boardgames, sending you and up to three other players on a global quest to check off all seven Wonders. You play as one of four pioneering explorers from antiquity (though where’s my main man Magellen?) The first to do this and accumulate the most points is the winner of the game. It’s a nifty little system which harkens back to the old days of board games, complete with childlike innocence and nostalgia; there’s no blood or guts here, and the game is classy enough to avoid relying on cheap tricks or gimmicks to retain your attention. Instead, it does it through simple graphics, effective, competitive gameplay, and a unique blend of fun and informative facts; for each country and city you visit, you’ll be provided with a number of cultural or geographical tidbits to compliment the fast and furious gameplay.

It’s a great concept for a game that pays off on a lot of levels, and makes this title appealing to children and adults of all ages. The multiplayer aspect is a great bonus, as even if you’re playing against computer opponents, having someone to race against definitely improves the gameplay. If you’re looking for a game that features a little more substance than the typical smartphone and iPad fair, check out New 7 Wonders of the World and get ticking off that virtual bucket list.
