Having been a great fan of the Star Trek television series, I was looking forward to playing Wrath of Gems and seeing all the characters in play that you know you so well. You will be expected to travel through the United Federation of Planets in an adventure that doubles as some sort of puzzle. So in effect, it’s like watching Star Trek and interacting within the classic television sci-fi drama at the same time.

The characters and star ships are straight out of the original series AND the Next Generation spin offs. What I found amazing is that you will have a plot or a storyline in which you must follow through and play at the level you are best at. It’s a no-brainer to suggest you should start at the beginners’ level and move forward as you get better.

The other thing I kind of loved about Wrath of Gems was the ability to go head to head with friends or family, rather than just playing out against the game itself. All the famous characters are all there: the original series duet of Captain James Tiberius Kirk and his side-kick Mr Spock, Scotty and Bones (the Doctor), and all the original members.

If, like me, you prefer the characters from the Next Generation series, then you’ll find them all here too. Captain Jean Luc Picard, Deanna Troi, Commander Will Riker and a number of characters from alien species.

You will love doing battle with the Romulans, the Borg and of course the Klingons (who appear to be part of the Federation during the later stages of the game). You will also like leading your crew through torn and devastated galaxies, intergalactic battles with Romulans, missions where diplomacy is called for and developing your characters so that you can use guile, strategy and a winning formula going forward.

Although many of the races and battles are straight out of scenes from the original series and the Next Generation, you will find plots and storylines that have never been seen before on either series. So, in a way it’s a bit like watching a brand new, unseen episode of your favourite series.

Although there will always be plenty of star ship battles, do prepare yourself for a bit of one on one fighting and invariably a diplomatic solution has to be applied, so every now and again you’ll have to talk your way out of battle and perhaps do a bit of compromising. Live long and prosper!
